Walk-in showers and tub-to-shower conversions

If the tub goes unused or has become hard to step over, a walk-in shower makes the bathroom easier to use every day. We build tiled showers with proper waterproofing, not a liner over an old tub.

  • Tiled walk-in and curbless showers
  • Benches, niches and grab-bar blocking
  • Frameless or semi-frameless glass

What a tub-to-shower conversion involves

Tub removal

Removing the tub and the wall finish around it, then checking the framing and subfloor.

Drain and valve

Moving the drain to suit the shower pan and replacing the valve so the controls sit where you can reach them.

Shower floor

A sloped mortar bed or a pre-sloped system, with a curb or a low or zero-threshold entry.

Waterproofing

A continuous waterproofing membrane over the walls and floor before any tile goes on.

Tile, niche and bench

Wall and floor tile, a recessed niche for bottles and an optional built-in or fold-down bench.

Glass and safety

Fixed panel or door, grab-bar blocking, a handheld shower and slip-resistant floor tile.

Is a curbless shower possible on a slab?

Most Houston homes sit on a concrete slab, so the shower floor cannot simply drop between joists. A curbless entry usually means recessing the slab where the shower goes or raising the bathroom floor to meet the shower. Both are doable; they add cost and time, and we check which one fits your bathroom at the site visit.

Will removing the last tub hurt resale?

Buyers with young children often look for at least one bathtub in the house. If the bathroom you are changing has the only tub, it is worth keeping one elsewhere. Converting a primary-bath tub while a hall bath keeps its tub is a common compromise.

What affects the cost of a tub-to-shower conversion?

A conversion costs less than a full bathroom remodel, but the scope varies more than most people expect.

What moves the price

  • Tiled shower or a solid-surface panel system
  • Curb, low threshold or curbless entry (curbless on slab costs more)
  • Drain and valve relocation
  • Tile size, pattern and how high it runs
  • Glass type and size
  • Whether the vanity, floor and lighting change at the same time

If you are also replacing the vanity, flooring or lighting, the project is a full remodel; see bathroom remodeling for published Houston cost figures.

Do you need a permit to convert a tub to a shower?

Moving the drain or replacing the valve is plumbing work, which in most cities around Houston needs a permit and must be done under a state plumbing license. We confirm what your city requires and schedule the inspection.

How we handle permits

Walk-in showers and tub conversions: common questions

Still unsure? Ask us directly and we will answer in plain terms.

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?
A tiled conversion typically takes one to two weeks of work, depending on waterproofing cure times, tile and glass lead time. Curbless showers on a slab take longer.
Do you need a permit to convert a bathtub to a shower?
Usually, when the drain moves or the valve is replaced, because that is plumbing work. We check your city’s rules and pull the permit.
Is a curbless shower possible on a slab foundation?
Often, yes, by recessing the slab at the shower or raising the surrounding floor. We confirm what your bathroom allows before you commit to the design.
Can you add grab bars later?
Yes, if we install blocking in the walls during the conversion. It costs little now and saves opening finished tile later.
Will removing a tub hurt resale value?
It can if it removes the only tub in the house. Keeping a tub in another bathroom avoids the problem.
